An interesting challenge this week. Seven new electric bikes to shoot for Power Pedals, left and right sides to be cut-out for the web. Having ascertained that the cut-out images were not going to overlap and were probably only going to be used with flat white as the background, I decided to shoot the bikes with as little manipulation work as possible, bearing in mind the complex nature of the image and the budget involved. So with careful handling of the light I was able to make sure that I achieved a toneless 255 white background without loosing resolution and flairing the foreground subject. In the end the only cutting-out work I had to do was to loose the supports and the foreground in front of the wheels. Saving a lot of time and working within budget.

I said it had been a very varied week. From shooting specialised precision engineered parts for the oil & gas industries to beautiful hand made silver jewelry by Marie Krazizky. Perhaps not too different from a photographic viewpoint but add 4 month old baby Coco into the mix and it’s entirely different! To be truthful Coco stole the show, smiling through no end of portraits and lifestyle shots with proud mum Nina and then rattling off 2 hand shots as well. A master class in professional modeling! After which, it really was time for a nap.

It’s a small world and often clients work with one another without me realising. This was such a case with Bluemay Weston. On visiting their factory to photograph the product being manufactured as in the last blog update, I realised that they were responsible for cutting out Janine’s mobiles at Design Kompott. As a layman, it was extraordinary as these mobiles are cut-out using a very fine jet of water under extreme pressure. The intricate detail that can be achieved by this method in such a small precise area is very impressive. To think that the same method can be used to cut through inches of steel, as well as this very fine cherrywood laminate is remarkable. All controlled by computer of course.
